I am getting ready to move my domain from a host i had for over 2 years. I never had a problem with being down but their customer service was non exsistent. I am also beginning studys in the exciting world of database administration and need some database capabilities which my old host didn't support either. My question is this.....What is the process to transfer an exsisting domain to insiderhosting? I didn't see anything about that in the order pages.

Hi Otter,

I came here two months ago with a bunch of existing domains and its really easy to do.

1) Click on the order button under the package you wish to order.
2) In the little box that says "Domain Name Search" click on the button that says No Domain Needed
3) Select your package and click continue
4) Then enter your email in the Contact Information section under new members and click continue.

5) The next page will ask you for your information and just fill it in giving the domain name of the site you want to transfer. (e.g. mydomain.com)

Then just follow the directions on whatever pages come next to enter your credit card information and submit your order.

There are no extra steps involved for an existing domain, actually there are less steps since you don't need to register anything. If you have any questions just post them here or email support as they are a friendly folk :D

The primary and secondary name servers to make your domain point to the right place are as follows:

ns3.insiderhosting.com
ns4.insiderhosting.com

Check with your registrar on how to change your name servers.

Thank you guys for answering this member once again, you guys are great. Otter, simply follow Eric's instructions as they are 100% correct (great job Eric). Also Chris, is correct in that you will point your domain to our ns3 and ns4.insiderhosting.com nameservers.

Assuming that he doesn't get his own name servers. ;)

pointing my domain to insiders name servers really gets to the heart of my question......you have to understand....the last time i tried to contact my previous host it took 12 emails and more than a week to get a responce. I can only imagine their enthusiasm to reply to me leaving them...i was hoping to avoid having to rely on them to get my pointed in the right direction (if you'll excuse the pun)

Changing the nameservers is something done at your registrar. This isn't necessarily your prior host. When I moved from my prior host to Insider Hosting, I went to my registrar, and updated my record with them to point my domains at Insider Hosting's name servers, instead of those of my prior host.

If your prior host was also your registrar, and you're that underwhelmed with them, you might want to transfer the registration, as well as the hosting. I'm sure Steve could explain how to transfer your registration here if that's what you want to do.

Okay, I just looked up ottermania.com. If that's the domain in question, then Melbourne IT is the registrar. They're at http://www.melbourneit.com.au/index.php and would be the folks you contact to change the nameservers for your domain. Since they're also the registrar for your current domain host, I'm guessing you got your domain through your current host, and they registered it for you through the registrar they used.

Then again, if none of this is making any sense, maybe having your host take care of this is what you want to do, in which case, it's back to Steve. :)

Hey otter, once you signup for an account with us, all you need to do is go to the place where you registered your domain (also known as your registrar), and login to their control panel. Then after you are logged into their control panel, you should have an option which says something like nameservers, manage dns or something of this nature. All you need to do is point your domain to our nameservers and you will be all set. Please note that you should already have your files uploaded to our server at this point. This process actually has nothing to do with your current hosting provider.

If you jump on ICQ I'll message you.

A virtual life should be so simple, huh. Ok, I originally registered my domain thru my host.....who , according to their site, partners with Network Solutions (a verisign company) to register domains. Melbourne IT, who, according to my ex-hosts site, is the company their domain is registered thru(-resists wondering how an aussie company landed that gig) works into this equation in that it will take a few days to have them repoint , if you will, the domain to the new name servers. (insert big sigh) The plot thickens........I have now emailed my ex host( i say that because i have alreadt ceased to do bizness with them and no longer have access to my control panel) and will wait paitently to see what word may come from them. Hell, i might not sleep tonight in anticapation.

Hey Otter,
Did your old host give you a username and a password to make any changes to the domain if you ever needed to do so? If so, you can make the change yourself without having your host do anything. Also do you have a copy of your site's files?
