Anyone know of scripts for maintaining a cooking/baking recipe database?

Thanks,
Ailish

Thanks, harmonic, for finding that. :)

I probably should have said free scripts, but I didn't. I played with the demo they have and it seemed kind of limited for what I'd want. Maybe this will be an excuse to play some more with PHP.

Thanks,
Ailish

Ailish,

I did a search of places I typically look for php scripts and such and only came back with one regarding "Homebrewing"....but if you decide to get into coding something.....check this site out as a possible inspiration... Recipe Site (http://www.foodlovers.co.nz/recipes/recipesearch.php)

You may want to check out the http://theredkitchen.net/ Kristine has done this using MT and I know you can do it with b2. She has a various number of cooks log in, including me, and post their reciepes. Is this what you were leaning towards?

:) There are numerous web rings on her site as well, you can surf the cooking ones and maybe see how others are doing it.

Thanks for the site pointer, SD and Sara.

SD, that site is a start, but still not as powerful as I imagined. But then, I've never been satisfied with any of the recipe software I've ever seen. Sometimes, I'm just too picky. :)

Sara, that site looks nice. I never even thought of doing it with the blogging software, since I was envisioning a complex database with specific search and conversion options.

As for what I had in mind, I'm still not sure. Last night, when I was writing a blog entry (http://blog.ailish.net/index.php?p=5) that mentioned the risotto I made for dinner, and I thought 'Gee, I could post a link to the recipe, if I had it online.' The rest, as they say... well, hasn't happened yet. :) I could certainly set it up quickly with B2, and for occasional use, that would probably be fine.

:) And there is a search feature so you could put all your recipe posts in different categories...main dish, dessert. I just put all mine under food. You can see a couple at my old blog as I have yet to plug in the MT archives. I'm going to be doing a photoblog on b2 for a client. We shall see how that works!

Glad I could help!

Just sticking everything under food would make sense if I were just tossing them into the regular blog, and now that I think of it, that would have probably worked, too. I created a fourth B2 blog, though, for food, and set up different food related categories. I still think I want a different format, eventually, but this was a quick solution, for now.

For photos, you might want to look at photo specific software, such as Gallery (http://gallery.menalto.com/), rather than blog software which seems primarily text focused. You can see a Gallery setup on my site (here (http://ailish.net/gallery/)).

Yes, that gallery is indeed one of the better ones I have used. I currently use that one for a non-profit organization site I run for my parents. It has been integrated into the phpBB forum I have set up for them as well and can be viewed here: OSSO Forum and Gallery (http://www.osso.org/phpBB2/) (click on link at top for gallery) -- and there is a picture of my middle child giving daddy a hug (one of my favorite photos) ;)

And I am thinking of converting our news to B2 soon as well.....

Okay....now back to the original topic..... :D ....any more progress in finding some recipe script Ailish? Or are you just going to blog it?

SmackDaddy, I've just started to blog the recipes (here (http://ailish.net/recipes)), for now. I still think there's probably a better way, but this will do until I find it.

Allish, if you email me with what you want in this recipe script I will make it for you for no charge. Please include all features and the type of layout you want.

Ross, thanks so much for the kind offer. The problem is, I'm not quite sure what I want. As I said earlier, most recipe software I've seen hasn't particularly impressed me (in part because they often claim all the 'great' recipes they include as their main feature, in an interface that's just not thought out). As a vegetarian, 90% of such included recipes are useless to me.

I was thinking of separate searches by name or ingredients, for one. Conversions would probably be the key area that distinguished the recipe software. Conversion between US and SI units, as well as conversion between volume and mass, particularly for baking. The later would require that the database keep track of the densities of ingredients. Recalculating quantities for different numbers of servings, too.

I think the blog format will work for me, for now, but if I come closer to a functional spec, I'll drop you a line.

Thanks,
Ailish
