View Full Version : b2 (news)
Hi,
Wow! I was gone for four days on a mini-vacation and came back to find about 40 new posts!
Anyway...I have been checking out the new Auto-Installer section of our new control panel theme "newpanel" and had a question about the b2 (news) program. Basically what is it?
Thanks

If I am correct, I believe b2 is a weblog/journaling/news script that uses PHP and MySQL. It would be something like Blogger (http://www.blogger.com), Greymatter (http://www.noahgrey.com/greysoft/), or Movabletype (http://www.movabletype.org).
Here is a link to b2: http://cafelog.com/
Thanks bgwen! :) for the link! Interesting photo on the main page too!
I had tried to install b2 when I first moved from Grey Matter instead of going right to MT. It's cool how it installs for you now...great tool!
Eric, I'm running b2 here: www.simplysara.com/news and I love it! It's so fast!! I would strongly suggest you install it yourself though. I pushed that install button and it made a new MySQL and put it in news. Which is wonderful, don't get me wrong, but changing url's for a blog is tons of work for some. I did install the upgrade as it's not the latest version in the cpanel. Simple upgrade and now I have smilies and a calendar. :) If you need help holler...I'm super familiar with it now after configuring the templates, etc.
I have now switched to b2...bye-bye MT. Heh.
I will now be able to offer installation and support for b2 to our clients...which totally rox! :D

Might take you up on that Sara.......gonna try it out for my daughter within the next week or so....
Thanks Sara! I will certainly take advantage of b2 when I get to setting up the blog stuff. Got a bit distracted the last 2 weeks and now the semester is starting soon ! (YIKES!)
Hey SD and Eric, I set up a new MySQL and name for one of my hosting clients last night. I installed b2 from the zip you can get on the b2 site. Not a single problem. Her blog is in a folder named blog, as I didn't use the install through the cpanel.

As mentioned in another thread, I'm very new to blogging software. I'd installed Movable Type last week, and had started to work at customizing that, though it wasn't a particularly intuitive task.
I decided to play with B2, as well, and so far my impression is that it is much more approachable than Movable Type. I haven't really touched the PHP templates, yet, but I have changed the style sheet to change the appearance.
I still haven't figured out if it'll let me journal with various levels of privacy, but it looks like I'll be able to figure that out more easily than I could have with MT.
I've switched my what's new (http://ailish.net/pb2) page over to B2, from MT (and cut/pasted the prior entries). Oh, and I also did an install of the latest version from the B2 site (http://cafelog.com), since they're reporting a security problem in prior versions (including the one that installs from CPanel). This also let me put it in a directory of my choice.
