I know i could have asked this on WHT or other places but this was the best place I could think of.

Managed and unmanaged dedicated servers???

all other aspects aside, am I right in assuming that...

an unmanaged server is just the server with an OS installed...meaning all the other crap like mysql, apache, php, etc, all this stuff you have to install yourself

while on a managed server, for the most part, some software is already installed.

Can someone please broaden my horizons?

Different providers will all give you different answers as management is a very broad term. Unmanaged, means we setup the server initially and it is up to the client to keep up with updates, upgrade kernels, php, mysql, other various modules.

Managed for us is we take care of everything, setting up of the server, kernel upgrades, monitoring, the whole 9 yards. Any custom software you want installed, we can do for an extra fee.

For non-Linux experts Stevens definition of Managed is far superior to others.

I know where I will be getting my dedicated server from :)

Be careful with other so-called 'Managed' dedicated servers, they usually charge for kernal upgrades, patches, updating PHP versions e.t.c.

Steven, just a quick question, what if the httpd file gets corrupted and we ask you to fix it, what hourly rate would that be?

Personally I would like to see a full list of what is and is not included in the price, perhaps even different fees for different support levels maybe?

Well, i'm definitely a non-linux expert. I'm still trying to grasp alot of things.

Now if I can get a managed dedicated thats setup with all the stuff that IH throws n the semi-deds, I'd be in internet heaven.

Hi Pete,
Sorry I missed this post. If the httpd file gets corrupted we have a script that backs it up nightly so we could do a restore. If you don't want a restore, (say in the event you added 10 clients sites)We usually can find the problematic line in a short amount of time, providing it isn't something like 1 character missing. We usually wouldn't charge for something like this. I'll see if I can get a list done by the end of next week. Also ping me on AIM, have to ask you a quick question.
