Please upgrade phpbb to the newest version, 2.08 I think. My 2.06 forum got hacked into and wrecked.

It is probably better to install yourself than the auto installer on some scripts, but being an admin of your site you should keep aware of security fixes for the software you install. You can install a 2.0.6 and then apply the current patches.
I always just download the patches. It's a lot easier to keep track of what's installed when you install it yourself. :)

Keeping on top of the scripts you use and the latest updates should be your own responsibility. The auto-installers do NOT get updated as often as the programs do........
So if you use any scripts or whatever, you need to make darn sure you keep up on the security and program updates at least WEEKLY! If you hadn't updated to 2.08, then it's your laziness causing the hacking, not IH's......especially since it's the CPANEL company, that puts those scripts in CPANEL....
It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. If your site's PHPBB, phpnuke, B2, or whatever get's hacked, and it doesn't have the latest patches or updates, then it's your fault. Not the hacker's.
I know I am coming off as harsh, but ya know, I have had my site(s) hacked more times than I care to admit due to my laziness in updating with security patches or program updates, that I don't have too much sympathy for those who do what I did........

SmackDaddy,
How involved are these upgrades? I'm currently running 2.0.6 and like to go to 2.0.10 but and not sure what to do...
Please advise,
Bren

I just updated 3 forums to version 2.0.10 that were running version 2.0.6. The update is not complicated at all - took about 20 minutes for each forum. Go to the phpBB downloads (http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php) page and download the package called phpBB 2.0.10 [ Changed Files Only ] . In the zip file, you will find an archive package of the change files to take your forum from 2.0.6 to 2.0.10. Read the README file for the instructions on how to complete the upgrade.
All that was involved was uploading the new files to the server in the proper folder structure, then running the install file to update the version number in the database - there were no other database changes needed.
If you have any questions, post them here and we'll try and help you out. ;)

This thread reminded me I needed to upgrade a couple of phpbb forums. It was simple.
Backup database (through cpanel)
Backup existing phpBB files
Download the "Changed Files" from phpbb
unzip
Overwrite existing files with new versions
Run "install/update_to_210.php"
Delete /install and /contrib directories.
That's all there is to it!
