We are working on some ads here for print advertising, (magazine, newspaper) and I was wondering what type of ad attracts you? Do you want to see the price jump out at you, do you want to see a list of features, or images? Some examples of what you like would also be appreciated, if you can find them.

Don't animate them.. Putting your most well-liked features and a price would be nice too, but keep your companies name the largest font...Make sure it's monotone, probably a light color with white text with black borders around the text would be nice.
If you want me to make a couple logos to show what I'm talking about i can, you can even use them if you want.. free of charge.

harmonic nailed it.
design i very important. this :guess always works too. you have to be able to grab thier attention and keep it so that they read the whole ad. for me if the price and features stand out i will skip right over the company logo and find out what they are offering. then i will hunt that company down. thats what i did when i switched to ih. hope this helps
harmonic, if i needed a couple of graphics for my website would you do them for free, maybe a link?

I tend to look at price and features when I "skim" ads.......if I see low prices, I look at the features.....and then I look to see if there is any "small print".......I *hate* small print. Either put it out there and don't be ashamed of it or don't include it in the ad.....make them come to your website where ALL the info is there......
My 2 cents....

i like really simple ads, that tells me everything i want to know right on the ad. when it comes to web hosting i want to know bandwidth, speed, price, and storage.
i really don't like cliches. some of these include customer comments. anyone can come up with a customer comment for their ads. (the forum thing is different)
btw, i hate those freaking dhtml ads that block my view of a website for 10 seconds. i make a point of not even looking at companies that run any type of overbearing ads.

Hey Guys and Gals, nice discussion we have going. One thing to remember is that this is not an online ad, it is an ad that will be placed in a magazine or newspaper. Therefore, there will not be any animation or any dhtml ads, as it is a print ad.

doh! shows how closely i read posts....
it will really depend on type of magazine the ad is at. It will also depend on the ads surrounding it. so if you know what type of magazine it will be you will pretty much know among what kind of ads it will be. So I think that a good way to determine is thinking of opposites.
if you think the ad will be surrounded by ads heavy on images and spectacular graphics, then go with a nice simple but eye catching design, and the opposite, if everything around it will be ala newspaper help wanted put nice image.
Also consider the colors to be contrasting if its a color, ot contrast black and white if its a b&w.
then after you are finished with the design post it here so everybody can disapprove :P
or go the best way just put this:
:guess
:D
excuse my typos that i went and fixed in word :)

yeah, i didn't really read much, so take in everything from my post except the animated part. make sure it is monochromatic to an extent, i don't like poorly colored ads.

the trick is to make it nice colored.. not to do it monocromatic in order to run from the chalange :D

Yes, but monochromatic ads look really nice in my opinion.
Steven, what magazines are you hoping to advertise in? If it's a PC magazine, duh right? I would think that an ad with the company logo in color and glossy white background with dark print would be fine. :) You want eye catching when you are flipping through mags. When you go through a magazine, do you look at the ads? I do if they are big enough to catch my eye and they are in color. It jumps out of the page at you and makes you look. Price will ALWAYS jump out first, so make that clear in the ad, either top or bottom, not in the middle. Features should be in the middle. Put a contact email or phone number, website address either at the top or at the bottom. So, your eyes see the name, price, features, contact. It's how we read, top to bottom. :) I will try and find some print ads and scan them for you if you want.

smooth design
cover the basics price, disk space, & bandwidth on your most economic package
simple usually comes off the best
Have you done the ad?
If so, can we what you went with?
