How long does it take, normally, after I point my domain to IH's servers before it all gets resolved and active? I did it last night and when I do a whois IH's servers are listed, but viewing my homepage still points to my old host.

Aaron,
As stated in your welcome emails it can take anywhere from 24-72 hours for the dns to resolve to our servers. The reason is because first you have to make the changes at your registrar, who makes the changes with the global registry. Then the various ISP (internet service providers) like AOL, Pac Bell, comcast, etc.. have to pick up the changes from the registry, and update their records. Once their records are updated, and the DNS is cleared from your ISP's cache, your domain will resolve to our servers. For me your site is already resolved on our server.

It's resolved for me now too. I'm just impatient is all.

Now I need to get to work and actually build the dang homepage.

Be warned, that it can take 4 days sometimes. I had an experience last month where after 12 hours a domain was resolved on the new IP, then later that day it wasn't, then it was, then it wasn't. Then after 48 hours the domain resolved but email never..... it was a cache problem with my ISP.

Therefore always give a good 3 to 4 days to be on the safe side, especially if you are sending a newsletter out to launch a site, it could be embarrassing if half your visitors don't see your site!

It's weird how it's different for everyone. I had a client purchase a new domain and point the DNS to us on Friday night. On Saturday morning I could see that it was resolved, but, she couldn't. She's in Florida and I'm in Virginia. I told her that sometimes ISP's don't refresh their cache daily or twice a day which would be the explaination. Later on Saturday she saw the site as well.

It's really weird how new domains just registered resolve quicker than established domains. I guess because they have not used a different DNS? It's about 24 hours for a new one on us...way cool! But, of course I tell them 24-72 hours anyway. ;)

I'm in the UK and notice that .co.uk domains resolve faster than .coms, .nets e.t.c.

I haven't really noticed any difference with newly registered domains compared to already hosted domains.

new domains don't have to get removed from cache's and things like that. they just have to be put into the large ISP's
