View Full Version : multiple domains and transfering files

A couple of quick questions before I fire my current host(ipowerweb) and join the IH team.
Concerning multiple domains, let's say I only have one domain right now so I allocate all resources to it. Later I get another domain and I want to host it on my IH account. Am I able to reallocate the resources from my original one domain to include the new one?
In regards to pricing, is there any discount if I want to pay for a year in advance?
I have a blog/journal that uses Movabletype. How difficult is it to transfer all my files and stuff to IH? Specifically I'm concerned about getting all the database info moved over. I've never done anything like that and I have no clue how to go about it. I could probably find some tips on the MT boards, huh.
I'm not even a member yet and already the support has been spectacular. I sent an identical email asking which MT module IH supports to four different hosting companies. IH was the only one to answer me with a live person and not a ticket number. The others contacted me eventually but the soonest was a few hours after I'd already had an entire conversation with Steven. I was truly stunned and impressed. If that is the kind of service I can expect throughout my life with IH, then I think I've found a good home, rather than a dysfunctional one.
One last thing. Is there an 'about' or 'history' page that tells the story of IH? How long have they been in business. I want a host I can be with for far into the future. This shopping around and moving business is for the birds. "I fear change."
Hi Aaron and welcome to IH!! I love that avatar! Too cute!!
I moved a whole blog hosting domain, on MT, over from Aletia to IH back in March. It's really simple and you can find the instructions on the MT support board. Just do a search for moving hosts or something like that and you will see it. :) Just make sure to do it for today and older or you won't see it. I have 12 on my blog hosting site, so, if I can do it, without too many major problems, I'm sure you can too!
There is a thread here somewhere, I think in general about IH and the history.
Welcome once again!
:)
hi aaron welcome to our forums. Yes if you have one domain at this time, we can allocate the full amount of space and bandwidth to it. Then if you ever decide on purchasing another domain or starting another site, we can always change around the space and bandwidth for you. We don't offer a discount on yearly payments, as we only accept payments on a month to month cycle.
About moving the MT files over, I'm sure that you can, however you will have to ask on of our resident MT experts if that is possible, although I don't see why it wouldn't be.
As far as the history of IH, check Steven's post on this thread http://forums.insiderhosting.com/showthread.php?threadid=73
Hope to see you around more.

I believe MT uses a MySQL database. If that really IS the case, it will be a very simple process by simply grabbing the tables from MT, then dump them on IH's servers. Then when you go to setup MT again, all you'll have to do is reconfigure the config files.
Actually Chris, you can access a MySQL database if you want with MT, but it's not solely run on one like b2 is. I had to transfer the db file folder I think. That's why I sent Aaron to the MT boards, so he could tell us how again!

I just signed up to be part of the IH family. (For some reason I really do feel like I'm joining a family) Can't wait to get my login and account info and get started transfering my files. The refund from ipowerweb will be a nice bonus too.
Haven't got around to scouring the MT boards. I'll do that now. Did you want me to get back to you with what I learn? I'm using MySQL for my db on my current host so hopefully it will be easy as pie.
Yup! Please! You have MT totally on MySQL? Cool! I never could get it to run totally on it, I have the rebuilding of templates still. Which is why 95% of my blogs are on b2. Simple as pie.

Hey Sara.
I guess I'm kind of confused by what you mean "MT totally on MySQL" MySQL is the database I'm using, rather than the Berkely db. And I don't know what b2 is, unless that's the Berkely db. It's late and I'm tired. Please forgive my denseness (density?).

Just to let you know. I got the MySQL database transferred over without a hitch.
I just went to the control panel of my former host and went to phpMyAdmin.
I selected the mt database and at the bottom of the resulting page under a bullet that says "View dump (schema) of database", I selected all the tables in the list, put a dot in the "structure and data" radio button, checked all the boxes (just 'cause I didn't know any better)
*Add 'drop table'
*Complete inserts
*Extended inserts
*Use backquotes with tables and fields'
and the very last box
*Save as File
Then I clicked the 'GO' button and saved it as a .sql file to my hard drive.
Then I went to my IH control panel, created a database and user and password with the same names as on the other host. I opened the MySQL area and clicked on the mt database (it all looked exactly like the control panel at my former host) and under the bullet
"Run SQL query/queries on database mydatabase"
there's a section that says "Or Location of the textfile :" I navigated to the downloaded .sql file, clicked "GO" and voila! my database was transferred.
I'm still waiting for all my files to finish uploading so I haven't verified that MT works yet. But I have a pretty good feeling that it will.

Aaron,
IH are a decent professional company, I highly recommend them, mainly for the following reasons:
1) They don't overload servers
2) They are available on IM for realtime support
3) They actively seek to constantly improve the service
4) Server loads are always low
5) Servers are fast as anything
6) Nothing is too much trouble for them, take the multiple domain plan at just $10 a month. In reality you can't expect much support for such a low fee, but IH treat you better than $40 a month hosts for one domain.
7) They don't lie unlike 99% of hosts.
Unlike all my other hosts I don't feel the need to have to constantly check a sys page or run top because my pages are slow. I can now go to sleep at night knowing my sites will be up and running, which is not the case with the other 15 hosts I have been with over the last 3 years.

Thanks Aaron!
When I first discovered MT it was just templates, not MySQL. Then, the upgrades came. Now, when I did the last upgrade back in June/July I tried to get it solely on MySQL but couldn't. I made the database, followed the directions and nothing. So, to tell you the truth, I don't think that any of the domains using MT still are on MySQL, I think they are on Berkely. Does that make sense?
b2 is a news/blogging tool. You can read more about it on one of the threads here in General or go to www.cafelog.com I have switched all but one domain to b2 from MT. Easier for me to have it since MT support went downhill this summer. A lot of people are moving away from MT.

Awww, don't tell me people are moving away from MT! I just discovered it recently and so far I love it. I haven't attempted to get support from the authors and I've had several questions answered on the MT boards. I'm not looking to switch at all.

I had tried MT for a very short time. I had it installed, and working fine, but found it cumbersome to customize to my needs. Once I tried B2, I deleted MT and never looked back.
